2015 Audi A7 Review

The Audi A7 is a luxurious four-passenger sedan that looks like a coupe and offers the functionality of a wagon, thanks to its fastback rear hatch. The Audi A7 is based on the same platform as the Audi A6 and has nearly the same footprint, save for the A7's distinctive sloping roofline.

New for Audi A7 is the line-topping S7, which features a unique front grille and exterior trim, along with unique 19-inch wheels. Inside, the S7 has beautiful diamond-stitched leather interior. The Audi S7 is powered the same engine found in the Audi S6, a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that cranks out 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Quattro all-wheel drive comes standard. Audi claims the S7 has a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. Also like the S6, the S7 uses cylinder-deactivation technology to improve fuel economy. But performance doesn't come cheap, as the S7 starts at more than $18,000 more than the base A7.

Audi A7 models are powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6, good for 310 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission offered is an 8-speed automatic. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard. EPA fuel economy ratings for the Audi A7 are a respectable 18/28 mpg City/Highway.

The A7 interior is lovely, the dashboard wrapping around the driver and into the front doors, the beautiful instrument panel perfectly framed by the three-spoke sport steering wheel. Legroom is acceptable in the rear seats. The 60/40 rear seatback flips down to a flat floor, and opens up the rear for cargo carrying that rivals a station wagon, accessible under the fifth door, the liftback.

We love the Google Earth navigation screen in the A7, which makes a fantastic map to follow, on a big pop-up screen. As for the navigation system itself, the good news is it will allow you to set a destination while the car is moving, but we found its accuracy lacking.

In the drivetrain department, the V6 is fast and silky, and the 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission is seamless. Audi Drive Select allows the driver to choose one of four modes: Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual. These modes adjust the transmission, power steering and engine to modify shift points, steering boost and throttle characteristics.

We found the A7 ride was smooth and comfortable at all times, even with 20-inch wheels and a sport suspension. The more we challenged the A7 in corners, the better it felt. However, we found the 20-inch tires sensitive to road surfaces, the car tending to move around at 70 mph. This may have been due to the optional low-profile 20-inch tires or the new electromechanical power steering system. The A7 Premium model may be more stable in this regard with its 18-inch wheels and tires.
Lineup

The Audi A7 comes in three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. All A7 models are powered by a 310-hp 3.0-liter supercharged V6 mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and using Audi's quattro all-wheel drive. EPA fuel economy ratings for th3 Audi A7 are 18/28 mpg city/highway.

The high-performance Audi S7 comes in a single trim level and is powered by a 420-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. An eight-speed dual clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive are standard.

A7 Premium ($60,100) includes leather upholstery, three-zone automatic climate control, heated eight-way power seats with four-way lumbar adjustment, driver memory functions, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power sunroof, the Audi MMI infotainment interface, Bluetooth and a Bose audio system with a CD player, satellite radio capability and an iPod cable. Exterior features include automatic bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, a power liftgate, automatic wipers, heated windshield washers, heated mirrors and 18-inch wheels.

A7 Premium Plus ($63,800) adds keyless ignition/entry, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, auto-dimming outside mirrors, navigation with voice activation and an upgraded version of Audi's MMI system, HD radio and 19-inch wheels.

A7 Prestige ($66,150) upgrades to four-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel, an upgraded 14-speaker Bose audio system, adaptive headlights and special S line exterior trim.

Options include a Cold Weather package with heated steering wheel and rear seats ($450), sport suspension and three-spoke steering wheel with 19-inch wheels (price varies by trim level), full LED headlamps ($1400) and an upgraded 1300-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system with 15 speakers ($5,900). One notable option is a rear bench ($350) that replaces the two bucket seats in back, which enables the A7 to seat five.

Safety options include rear thorax side airbags ($350), a package that bundles power folding mirrors, side blind zone monitoring and a pre-collision safety system ($500), as well as a Driver Assistance Package ($2,500), which includes the power-folding mirrors, side monitoring system and pre-collision system, plus full-range adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.

Audi S7 ($78,800) comes fully loaded with diamond-stitched leather upholstery, four-zone automatic climate control, 12-way power heated front sport seats with driver memory settings, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, keyless ignition/entry, park assist with rearview camera, garage door opener, power sunroof, Audi Drive Select with adaptive air suspension, real ash wood accents, navigation, Bluetooth, a Bose audio system with CD/DVD player, HD radio and iPod cable, and the Audi Connect interface, which allows users to turn the car into a WiFi hotspot (includes six-month subscription). Exterior features include heated auto-dimming sideview mirrors, adaptive xenon headlights, power hatchback and 19-inch wheels.
Walkaround

Stylish horizontal headlamps (xenon standard, LED optional), along with the large horizontal air intakes underneath the headlamps, balance the large Audi grille and minimize its boxiness. It's the same nose as on the A8. The matching upswept angles of the headlamps and air intakes, on the corners of the rounded nose, suggest motion, if not flight. They make that big and busy front end work.

The standard xenon headlight system is called all-weather lighting, including lights that replace fog lamps that would otherwise be mounted in the air intakes. The standard daytime running lights are LED. Audi claims that the optional LED lighting, as on our Prestige test model or as a stand-alone option, makes night look like daylight, but we couldn't quite see that. The lights were indeed excellent, but they were excellent headlamps lighting the darkness, not erasing it.

The silhouette of the Audi A7 is sleek, more like the Jaguar XF than any of the other four-door coupes; the Mercedes CLS remains the boldest and most striking. The coefficient of drag is a neat 0.30 Cd. From the rear, the stretching roofline and glass of the A7 give it a retro look, like some of the fastback sports cars of the 1950s. It almost looks as if it was added on to an Audi sedan, like the A7 was designed nose-to-tail, rather than all at once. But at the least, it's clearly a different Audi.

There's an integrated rear spoiler that automatically raises at 80 mph and retracts at 50; or it can be deployed manually.
Interior

The stylish interior is lovely, as one should expect from a car of this caliber. The dashboard suggests a wide horizontal arc, wrapping around the driver and into the front doors. There are two types of standard perforated leather, called Milano or Valcona, with aluminum-look trim. The standard wood trim is ash, with dark walnut or brushed aluminum optional.

The beautiful instrument panel stands out before the driver's eyes, perfectly framed by the three-spoke sport steering wheel with spokes at 3 and 9 o'clock. The white-on-black numbers on the tachometer and speedometer are crystal clear. Between them there's a digital display with all the right information, that allows you to switch between 'short-term memory' or 'long-term memory,' for example with fuel mileage. The excellent thing about this display is that all the information is there at all times: no scrolling. It all fits without being crowded. And it's readable in the sun.

The standard Audi A7 seats four, not five. However, it can be ordered with an optional rear bench, which replaces the two rear bucket seats and enables the A7 to seat five.

There's acceptable legroom in the rear, 37.0 inches, and spacious cargo room of 24.5 cubic feet behind the seats, accessible under the fifth door, the liftback. The 60/40 rear seatback flips down to a flat floor, and opens up the rear for cargo carrying that rivals a station wagon.

It's super quiet inside, thanks to lined wheelwells and underbody panels, along with a windshield film and special sealing on the doors and windows.

Visibility out the expansive rear glass is good, when it's not obscured by a persistent broad reflection from the beige interior in our A7, so bad in the sun that we had to back up blind; maybe the reflection won't appear with black interior. The sideview mirrors automatically fold at 45-degree angles when you park, but they don't unfold fast enough when you jump in your car and go, for example out of a parking space along the curb.

Our test car came equipped with navigation, and we love the Google Earth display, which is extremely detailed, although some who are used to looking at more basic map displays may complain it's a little too busy. And unlike many nav systems, the Audi's will let you set a destination while the car is moving. Unfortunately for us, our navigation got us lost on two separate occasions. We were smack dab in front of our destination, a Harbor Freight store correctly entered by its address, and the navigation told us to turn around and keep going, the store was 1.2 miles away. Another time we tested it, fully knowing our way between two places, and it sent us on a preposterous loop that ate up 20 minutes. And the voice recognition was futile: you say Gresham, it hears Rochelle, 3000 miles away. Since navigation isn't standard on the base Premier model, we suggest skipping the factory nav and buying an aftermarket GPS unit instead. They're much less expensive, and possibly more accurate.
Driving Impression

If one were to describe an ideal powertrain for a car like this, it might be the A7's 3.0-liter supercharged V6, making 310 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, and getting an EPA-estimated 18/28 mpg City/Highway miles per gallon.

It's fast and silky. Now attach the seamless 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with paddle shifters, that you can either play with or forget about. Combine them with the superb Audi quattro all-wheel drive system for all-season traction, and you can't be beat. However, premium fuel is required for the high-compression engine with spark ignition and direct injection.

Acceleration from 0 to 60 is 5.4 seconds, quick as you'd ever need to slip safely onto the freeway. You can't even feel the transmission shifting on the climb up to 60 and beyond, and it will maintain 80 mph uphill without kicking down. The Mercedes CLS offers a big V8 with big horsepower, but that means significantly more money and less fuel mileage.

Then there's Audi Drive Select, a program that allows the driver to choose one of four modes: Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Individual. These modes adjust the transmission, power steering and engine to modify shift points, steering boost and throttle characteristics. With so many options, you can find what makes you happy.

The brakes are powerful with an easy feel requiring no concentration. They'll never be an issue, with gigantic 14-inch front and 13-inch rear rotors.

Our A7 Prestige was equipped with a sport package that included 20-inch wheels, a firmer suspension and low profile, 265/35 summer tires. With this setup, the ride was smooth and comfortable at all times, but lane changing on the freeway kept us on our toes. Since our Prestige had the big wheels and tweaked suspension, we wonder how a simple Premium would move on the freeway. Maybe with less efficiency and directness, which might be a good thing.

The Servotronic speed-sensitive electromechanical power steering system that Audi calls highly efficient. Mechanically, it's most likely true; but when they use adjectives like that, as with the Multi Media Interface, we get leery. It has a quick 15.9:1 ratio, that Audi calls sporty and direct.
Summary

Elegant and convenient, the Audi A7 features coupe-like looks with the accessibility of a hatch, along with a superb powertrain, stylish interior and admirable fuel economy.

Audi RS Q3 Reviews

Audi has released a significant update to the RS Q3 crossover. A refreshed exterior light - the most noticeable changes is that the surround grille and headlights are now joined - belies the more significant changes under the hood that a compact crossover.

The strength of the 2.5-liter, turbocharged five-cylinder has been driven both from 310 horsepower to 340, while torque has been increased from 309 pounds-feet to 332 lb-ft. The result of this additional thrust is that small CUV can now sprint to 62 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds faster serious, than the original Q3 RS 5.5 seconds to run. A fifth-generation multi-plate clutch installed in the new seven-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic transmission, which Audi claims will now deliver faster shifts.

Lightweight brake rotors with eight-piston calipers silly in front of giving what we imagine a lot of stopping power, while Audi continues to offer optional adaptive damping system. Standard 19-inch wheels while the 20s are optional.

European prices for this tiny terror began Crossover at € 56,600, which makes it slightly more expensive than 55 871 euro Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG, the most obvious rival. Scroll down for a short video and the full press release from Audi.

BMW i8 Reviews

A funny thing happened on the way to our first US drive BMW i8 plug-in hybrid: We see, trundling along in the next lane, the DeLorean DMC-12 with the inevitable TME MCHN vanity plate, a reference to the 1985 Return to the Home. Is this a divine prophecy about our upcoming trip or just a coincidence California?

John Z. DeLorean aspire to sell cars "ethical" allegedly safer sport than conventional two-seaters in his day. Keywords BMW is "sustainable," but the goal is the same. Minus, of course, part of the DeLorean was accused of trafficking cocaine to fund its business.

Every journey begins with the i8 big show-opening doors. A-pillar hinge split the difference between a pair of scissors and a gull wing formats. Scullwing? Opening and stick aluminum, carbon fiber door injection-molded plastic, and it is easy, not only because they are light but because BMW applying expertise spring / damper struts are famous for doing most of the work.

The trick to entering is to sit and swivel over the knee-high sill one leg at a time. Visions of whisking down a playground slide on the drop into the seat are purely intentional. People in skirts will likely prefer a foot-first entry, an alternative procedure that works nearly as well. The plus-two rear seats are excellent for delighting kids, stashing your fitted Louis Vuitton carbon-fiber luggage ($26,050 for the four-piece set), or sending your least-favorite adult into spinal spasms. Those who prefer toting their gear out of sight can use the five-cubic-foot rear compartment accessible via the glass hatch.

Punching the start button wakes the electronic dash without eliciting combustion. The driver must now choose from five distinct propulsion modes. Notching the standard BMW shift lever back and to the left selects the preferred sport option, where the front electric motor, a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, and a second electric motor contribute 357 combined horsepower to the cause.

Other than the occasional whir, the motors are quiet at work. The engine overcompensates with a civilized idle burble and a self-assured sports-car thrum. Leg it and there’s an appropriate rise in feistiness but no clue as to the number of cylinders feeding the turbo, which huffs 22 psi of boost into this British-built, long-stroke three.

Response to the right pedal is initially sluggish, then impressively potent once all three power providers chime in. The best engine notes are cued by the Aisin six-speed automatic’s upshifts. Every rip-braap! from the pipes cleanses the mind of hybrid notions. The two-speed GKN automatic between the 129-hp AC motor and the front wheels is this powertrain’s silent partner.

Zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and 12.4 seconds in the quarter-mile confirm that BMW is earnest in its sports-car intentions. Hold the pedal down and the i8’s little-engine-that-can revs to 6000 rpm through the first five gears to a governed 155-mph top speed in sixth.

Corvette Stingray and Porsche 911 owners should be impressed by those stats if not by this car’s $136,625 asking price. BMW i8 drivers will surely respond by asking: How many miles can Vette guys drive consuming no fuel? The i8’s Eco Pro and eDrive modes offer 22 miles of electric range while providing enough speed and acceleration to rule any car-pool lane, especially ones that allow zero-emissions vehicles with lone occupants.

Two driving personalities make for double the fun. Commutes, for example, are less tedious when the game is completing the trip without tapping your onboard store of refined dinosaur. Then, if the mood strikes, you can switch into comfort mode to charge the battery on the roll in preparation for the homestretch, when the team of three propulsion sources mounts a Corvette- or 911-like attack.

BMW made sure that the i8’s chassis is suitably armed for combat. It reinforced the carbon-fiber center-body module with aluminum inserts and a substructure at each end to support the steering, suspension, and propulsion gear. The electric power steering is tight to the touch, quick on turn-in, and nicely weighted to sync the effort to rising cornering force.

What’s lacking is any real feedback from the front multilink suspension and the 215/45R-20 Bridgestone Potenza S001 non-run-flat tires. The five-link rear suspension and its 245/40R-20 tires keep the heavy end of the i8 in check while electronically managed dampers astutely control ride and body motion.

Tire-tread noise and shake triggered by L.A.’s rippled pavement invade the cockpit but never so rudely as to slosh coffee. There are meaty four-piston, fixed-caliper brakes in front and less-impressive floating-caliper stoppers in back. Regen automatically kicks in when you lift off the accelerator. The friction-electric blend is seamless on the highway, but the brake pedal is touchy in town.

In spite of its sprawling 110.2-inch wheelbase and dual energy tanks, electric motors, and transmissions, the i8 feels lighter and more agile than its Corvette-plus size suggests. Dive-bombing the Tehachapi, California, foothills never rattled this car’s poise. The tail remains painted to the pavement, and there’s manageable understeer when grip finally runs out.

So what did BMW screw up as it ventured deeply into uncharted territory? We’d be happier if the front hood opened to show off the pony-keg-sized electric motor (accessible only by service techs), and we’re suffering withdrawal anxiety over the i8’s barely visible exhaust pipe. The instrument cluster is too small and marked with graphics difficult to read at a glance. We’d willingly trade some of the electric-propulsion info for a more legible tach. The flying doors and large battery box dominating the center of the interior whittle stowage space to a ridiculous minimum. Cup holders, for example, are relegated to the back seat. But this may just signal a typically German disdain for fluids (in the car).

Like the DeLorean DMC-12 that earned immortality as a Hollywood car-porn star, BMW’s i8 is likely to achieve design-icon status. Regrettably, it’s too low volume (fewer than 500 will be made per year) and arguably too expensive to wreak havoc in the traditional sports-car ranks. No, its playground is elsewhere. Remember that, globally, the number of city centers shunning CO2 emitters is rising. That means BMW i8 owners will enjoy exclusive access to at least a few areas denied to ordinary sports cars. Back to the future indeed.

BMW 335i REVIEW

Restorative justice is forcing a criminal to apologize to his victim. And I am in the dock again, with prosecutor Chilton accusing me of kerbing without due care and attention. His memory is much longer than he is, because this rap dates back to a nibbled alloy on his long-gone MX-5. The day he got it, the latest case involves my 335i, whose 19 inch wheels resemble Swiss cheese with specks of black mould. So I am bundled off to Pristine Alloy Wheels in Bedfordshire, to get them refurbished and learn the error of my ways. The firm’s MD, David James, directs my patience. The 67 year old golf nut (the game, not the car- he drives Aston Martin) began alloy wheel repairs in the late 80’s. He noticed customers at his Fred the Tread tyreshop had crumbling alloys, with corrosion in once hot brake dust or a kerbside skirmish breached the protective lacquer. So James branched out into the wheel refurbishment and, two decades on, has 60 staff and 400 agents nationwide feeding in work. Door to door, the process takes three years to four days. As soon as I arrive, the 335 is inspected. One of the rims is badly gouged, and will need an aluminum weld to build it back up.

It will then follow the other three alloys onto a computerized lathe, where a diamond cutter slices off threads of aluminium like strands of silver hair, until the rim is back to its original profile. First the rims are prepared, shot-blast and doused in chemicals, to remove grime or corrosion. After brushing, they are machined on lathe, and then cleansed in demineralised water. The wheel is then pre-heated to dry it and to remove any internal gases. My repair cost $352 before VAT and the $465 rims look as good as new again.

BMW USA REVIEW

BMW USA has released details on the production version of the new BMW M3. This new model will be released in the US in mid-2008 as a 2009 model year, but it will probably reach the European market sooner. More details after the jump.
On the exterior, only the two doors, the bootlid, the windows, the headlights and the rear lights have been carried over from the standard E92 3 Coupe. The rest are unique for the M3, which should have given the car a more aggressive wider stance but somehow, well, not that aggressive. Many have commented that the new M3 looks too much like the standard 3 Coupe, despite most of the body panels being different. The tell-tale signs that the car is an M3 would be the powerdome on the front bonnet, the two air intake openings on the sides, as well as a roof made of clearly visible carbon fiber plastic, or CFP. Wheels are some lovely 18 inch alloys as standard with an option for larger 19 inch alloys.
Under the hood is a new 4.0 liter V8 engine which has already been explained in detail in a previous post. To recap a little, it makes 420hp and reaches peak power at 8,300rpm before revving abit more all the way up to 8,400rpm. It makes 400Nm of torque achieved from as low as 3,000rpm, which is amazingly low for such a high revving engine. 85% of this peak torque remains available for a wide range of 6,500rpm. This 105hp per liter engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox with integrated oil cooling, and a mass inertia-optimised double-plate clutch. Of course, the difference that sets the 335i and the M3 apart is the Variable M Differential Lock, which can transfer power from the left rear wheel to the right rear wheel up to 100% each side, ensuring optimum traction.
Driving dynamics can be controlled via MDrive, where you can set and retrieve the driver’s configuration of the engine control map, suspension, Servotronic power steering and also DSC set-up. The suspension involves using special weight-optimised components, forged aluminium track control arms, and there is optional Electronic Damper Control (EDC) that has three different damper settings to choose from – Normal, Comfort, and Sports.
On the interior, the meter panel incorporates the classic variable redline warning, which slowly increases up to the maximum of 8,400rpm as the engine warms up. You steer the car gripping a BMW M leather steering wheel, which also house audio system controls, mobile phone controls, and the MDrive button. For larger people, which I suspect I will need, there is an option for special seats with adjustable backrest width to ensure you are snugly fit into the seats comfortably.
The windscreen has intentionally been surrounded by dark colours to help the driver focus on the road in front of him. The interior leather used is black, and all the other trim are dark coloured, creating a sporty interior ambiance. Not like that’s needed when you can easily be reminded this is an M3 with a tap of the brushed aluminium accelerator pedal. Other optional trims are Palladium Silver, Bamboo Beige and Fox Red.
As for colour, there will be 4 special M Metallic paintwork options – Melbourne Red, Jerez Black, Interlagos Blue, and Silverstone. Silverstone is already available on both the M5 and M6 – it’s basically a lovely shade of light silver with a tinge of blue. Melbourne red is the colour you see in these photos. Jerez Black has slight blue pearl pigments to it, and Interlagos Blue has some red pigment in it, which causes an interaction of blue and violet especially when combined with Chris Bangle’s trademark “flame surfacing” effect on the body panels. There are also other colours available – Alpine White and Black, as well as Sparkling Graphite and Space Grey.

Mercedes. Controlled by the Activities Car Team of The united states, the sequence was run in compliance to the FIA's Team 7 guidelines for Activities Rushing Automobiles. Mercedes already owned and operated a title effective popularity. The competition would outcome in the little Mercedes not completing due to the loss in a rim. Ferrari's would be missing at the beginning competition organised at Elkhart Pond, Wi in 1967. This competition would level the overall look of two new Mercedes Can Am cars by means of P4s. Amon, being the professional car owner he was, conducted well at Laguna Seca generating the variety 23 Mercedes P4 from Sixteenth on the lines to a 5th place complete. The 1968 period would be a critical one for Mercedes. Consequently, Mercedes did not get into any fancy car activities as a manufacturer attempt in 1968, except one; the Stardust Huge Corrt of Las Nevada. The Ferrari's first overall look at Las Nevada was nothing brief of amazing. This remaining second place to the Mercedes, which it would maintain for the rest of the competition. Amon would proceed his ability of stage completes with the big red Mercedes at Mid Oh. Amon would take the big Mercedes to the activities at Mich and Laguna Seca, but website issues would outcome in the car not taking to the lines at these two activities.
